On a recent trip to Dorset for landscape and nature photography I spent a beautiful evening watching the gathering sunset from St Alban’s Head near Worth Matravers. I hadn’t visited the area before but researched as to when and where the sun would set. A bit of time with the map then gave me a short list of locations for the trip. Of the three days this was the only dawn or dusk where the weather came right.
A grey graduated filter helped balance the sky and land. Apart from that it was just a case of settling on one composition, using the histogram as a rough guide to exposure, positioning the filter carefully, locking the mirror up and using a cable release. Oh, and waiting. Waiting and enjoying the atmosphere.
